Aeropress

The AeroPress is a highly versatile coffee brewing method. National and international AeroPress championships attest to the enduring popularity of this coffee maker. It allows you to brew both intense, mocha-like extracts and aromatic filter coffees. During brewing, the coffee floats in the water, just like with a French press, but is then filtered through a paper filter instead of a metal sieve.

Making coffee with the AeroPress

Making coffee with the AeroPress

The AeroPress is a true all-rounder that allows you to prepare a variety of extracts. The grind size, coffee quantity, water quantity, and water temperature all have a significant impact on the flavor.

The finer you grind the coffee beans, the more surface area the water has for extraction. This means that with a fine grind, you extract more soluble substances from the coffee in the same brewing time than with a coarse grind. The result is a more intense flavor. However, if the brewing time is too long for the grind size, the coffee can taste bitter.

When preparing coffee with the AeroPress, you have a lot of flexibility in the brewing ratio (coffee to water), allowing you to create both strong, short extracts and aromatic filter coffees. So-called bypass recipes have become extremely popular. These involve brewing with 30-35g of coffee and around 100-150g of water, and then diluting the extract with hot water to taste.

The optimal water temperature for the AeroPress also depends on the recipe and, above all, the type of coffee. The manufacturer recommends 80°C, although we recommend a range of 80°C to 94°C, depending on the coffee.

Austrian Aeropress Championship 2015

Aeropress Championships

Due to its immense popularity, die-hard AeroPress fans have established national and international championships. Since the first championship in Oslo in 2008, participants from 60 countries have competed in the competition. The focus is on having fun with the preparation method and innovative recipes, and the subsequent celebration is always a sure thing.

In the competition, three participants compete simultaneously and have five minutes to prepare, brew, and present their recipe. Unlike other competitions, such as the World Brewers Cup for filter coffee, the judges don't use a point system, but instead simultaneously choose the coffee they consider to be the best. It's tough but fair and entertaining in every way. Perhaps you, too, will become an AeroPress enthusiast?

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the AeroPress work?

When brewing coffee with the AeroPress, the coffee floats in the water like a French press, but is then pressed through a paper filter. This gives the filter coffee a particularly full-bodied flavor. The AeroPress is therefore a hybrid coffee maker that combines the advantages of the immersion brewing method with the classic filter coffee brewing method using a paper filter.

Which coffee beans are best for the AeroPress?

There are no limits to your choice of coffee beans, as tastes vary. However, we recommend light or medium roasts so that the roasted aroma doesn't completely mask the sweetness of the coffee. For all types of filter coffee, you should choose pure Arabica varieties due to their greater complexity and finer aroma.

What material is the AeroPress made of?

During the development of the AeroPress, special attention was paid to the ease of use and portability of the coffee maker. Due to its light weight and compact size, the AeroPress is ideal for travel, vacation, or everyday office use. It is made of polypropylene, which is completely BPA-free.
