About Us
Süssmund Coffee Roastery from Vienna

Süssmund Kaffee was founded in 2014 by Nikolaus Hartmann after he realized that his vision of gently roasting coffee according to its origin and processing resonated with people. He decided to completely abandon his career as an architect and dedicate himself entirely to coffee. Originally from the financial sector, Norbert Rieberer has been part of Süssmund since 2018. Their shared passion for special coffee, and a common understanding of ethical business practices and sustainable production connect the two.
What does specialty coffee mean?
Central elements of specialty coffee are the trade of outstanding coffee qualities, fair payment for coffee farmers, and a transparent production and supply chain. These cornerstones form the basis of our corporate philosophy and thus our business model.
Coffee can only be called specialty coffee when the interplay of ideal microclimates with special soil conditions and the greatest care in production lead to outstanding flavors. According to the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA), specialty coffee must achieve more than 80 points on a 100-point scale.
What sets us apart?
We gently roast our coffee in a handmade drum roaster from Greece. This creates more complex aromas and less stomach-irritating acids than in fast, industrial roasting processes at high temperatures.
To ensure that the origin-specific and varietal aromas of the coffee are not lost, we develop a unique roasting profile for each coffee. Coffee has over 800 possible aromas, more than wine. We want to make these tangible and make consumers aware of the diversity of coffee flavors.
In this podcast by Feine Bohne with Nikolaus, you can learn more about Süssmund's origins, coffee cultivation, trips to the origin, and coffee competitions such as the Brewers Cup.
